Rainy red flag at Sebring

wet_race
The Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring has been halted by thunderstorms including heavy rain – all cars are confined to pit lane under a red flag.

The first drops of rain began to fall after 60 minutes and intensified 20 minutes later sending the first cars to the pit lane to switch to wet tires.

race_startA key safety car period kicked off at 96 minutes into the race but a number of key contenders pitted for wets before the pits were open – causing a slew of penalties for teams including both BMW M6 GTLM entries which dominated qualifying yesterday.

The race went through a number of safety car periods before the TV cameramen had to abandon their posts due to the threat of lightning – causing the broadcast to be shown through locked off cameras and in-car vision.

Two cars suffered major incidents. The Lamborghini GTD entry of Townsend Bell went off in turn 17, burying the No.11 car deep into the tire wall.

The Ford GT of Dirk Mueller then ran off in turn one at the two hour, 46 minute mark – the car also finishing in the tire wall.

Both drivers were checked out at the infield care center but were released.

After two hours, 55 minutes, the race was red flagged with all classes heading to the pit lane. Heavy thunderstorms are predicted to continue until late this afternoon.

Leaders under the red flag include the Action Express Racing duo of Christian Fittipaldi and Dane Cameron running 1-2 in prototypes, Nick Tandy and Earl Bamber running 1-2 in GTLM for Porsche, Stephen Simpson in PC and Mario Farnbacher in GTD.

“It was super-tricky conditions there at the end. I watched the 66 Ford go off in front of me just before the red flag. It’s not easy for sure, but this is our job. We’ll do our best,” Corvette Racing’s Tommy Milner said.

“We talked among ourselves about whether any of us had run in the wet here before. None of us came to the conclusion that we’ve raced here in the wet but we’re pretty sure we’ve all driven here a little bit in the wet.

“It’s not much, though. Sebring is usually super hot and super dry. This is unique.”
