The No.912 of Fred Makowiecki was the first to strike trouble – the team unable to remove the left rear wheel during a pit stop.
After a long delay, the team sent him back out on the existing wheel and returned a lap later when they finally were able to replace it.
However, Makowiecki returned to the pits shortly after – car going back to the paddock for repairs. He returned to the race with a new left rear upright with around 25 minutes to go but was several laps down.
Nick Tandy had been dominant at the front of the pack but shortly after suffered gear shifting issues – also taking him out of contention for the win and even a podium.
The Corvette Racing combination of Antonio Garcia, Jan Magnussen and Ryan Briscoe took over the lead and look handily placed to repeat their victory from the Rolex 24 at Daytona.
But as they say…..”it isn’t over until the fat lady sings.”
